How to get ready to work or study abroad?

If you are reading this post or if you have already had a first contact with Go Dodoland, it means that you have decided to go abroad, or at least you would like to enroll it out in the future. And we know that it is an awesome decision, which will change your life for sure.

If you already have your destination in mind, doubts and anxiety starts to appear. Don’t worry. A such important trip needs to prepare administration wise but also mentally! In this article, we are going to give you the best advices based on our own experiences. Follow these suggestions and forget about any fear, stress or doubts.

Set personal goals and challenges:

Some people have an unlimited necessity to explore new countries and cultures. They are people who are not afraid of the unknown world… So, if you are this kind of people, you are very lucky! But beware! Don’t take all this too lightly either.

But, if you are one of those who desire it but wonder about a lot of things, going abroad can be hard to undertake. Leaving family and friends to go to a brand-new environment entirely unknown can be very frightening.

To help you through this stage, you can see this adventure as a personal challenge. Think about what scares you: finding yourself alone? Having to open up to strangers? Organizing your life yourself? Take this challenge as a way to face these fears to get rid of. Living an experience abroad will make you grow and you will learn things about yourself that you may not know. A new “I” will come home, you can be sure of that!

Administrative process:

An experience of this magnitude has to be organized well in advance, at least three or four months before the great departure, and one of the most important aspects to take into account are the visas management and other essential and mandatory administrative aspects in order to be able to work abroad:

Prepare and save your documents: Make sure you have a valid passport (which does not expire during your stay in your new country!) and a visa adapted to your experience. There are a wide variety of visas for work, study or just tourism. Once you have all the necessary documents to be able to travel legally to the new country, scan them and send them to yourself by e-mail. So, you’ll always be sure to have a copy in case they are lost or stolen – hopefully not!

  • Register in the Government website(If you came from Canada or from USA) it allows the government of your country to keep all your personal data confidential in order to ensure your safety in the event of a serious emergency: attack, natural disaster…
  • Take out a travel insurance: If you belong to one of the countries that make up the Schengen Area, in Go Dodoland we facilitate this procedure as we have an agreement with an international insurance company. On the contrary, if you do not belong to it, you will have to process the travel insurance by your own. This is one of the most important aspects when travelling and undertaking this adventure.
  • Notify your bank: You don’t want the cashier to swallow your card barely arrived! Notify your bank in advance and inform of your departure abroad, as sometimes the best thing to do is to change your card or make changes within your bank account. Depending on the duration, we even recommend opening bank accounts in the local country. Also take the opportunity to plan your budget, although it is difficult to estimate the cost of living before living abroad.

Personal organization:

Expatriation has nothing to do with organizing a “regular” tourist trip.  The best way to avoid stressful situations when leaving home and saying goodbye to your family and friends is to be well organized.

This starts with a good knowledge of your host country. You need to get as much information as possible. About the local currency, the political situation, living and working conditions, the cost of living… One of the best ways to get information is to contact expatriates already living in that country. You can contact them in forums, blogs or in special Facebook pages. Thanks to this platforms you will have an authentic and more precise testimony of the life in the new country. For example, there are Facebook groups “Canadians in X” for all countries in the world (or almost) and they are very active. Here you can ask whatever you want, there will always be someone to advise you!

It’s also a good way to start creating a network of contacts. Considering that, when you arrive, after the first days of enthusiasm, you may start feeling a little lonely. So, it can be comforting to know that people from your country live in this new place, still unknown to you.

To make sure you get the most out of your stay abroad, we advise you to draw up a list of all the things you want to see, do or visit, so that you will be motivated to live all those adventures you have in mind! You can consult online tourist guides such as the Lonely Planet ones to find out about the most special, curious and interesting places the new country has to offer.

Stay positive!

We won’t hide it from you, getting out of the comfort zone, living away from family and friends can be difficult at first. The most important thing is to keep a positive mind and attitude as any international experience is worthwhile.

Keep in mind that the adaptation period is different for some people, but don’t give up on the first difficult moment. You should think about how proud you will be at the end of this adventure. You will have gained vital experiences that will have helped you to grow up and gain personal skills essential in the day to day life.

Now that you have everything ready, all that’s left is to wish you a safe journey! Make the most of this unforgettable experience that will make you grow both professionally and personally. And when you finish the adventure, you will need to prepare for the next stage, the difficult return to reality, to routine, so …Stay positive!
